Chama Depot and Yard
We drove up from Santa Fe to the arrive to Chama about 20 minutes before our train departure to check things out. Our Northbound train out of Chama was led by Cumbres & Toltec 2-8-2 #489 a Baldwin K-36 built in 1925 and Denver & Rio Grande Western #463 a Baldwin K-27 built in 1903. Our train consist was: Big Horn II (Coach), Phantom (Coach), Big Horn (Coach), Lava (Coach), Lobata (Coach), Rio Arriba (Coach), Dalton (Coach), Santa Fe (ADA Coach), Toltec Vista (Open Air), Chama (Deluxe Class Coach), New Mexico (Parlor Class Observation). We rode in the Chama coach which was set up more like a diner, but Jim spent a lot of time on the open air car. They seperated the locos at the Lobato Trestle to run them across seperately due to weight restrictions. The lead loco 489 was cut off at Cumbres Pass and returned to the Chama while the 463 and train continued on to Antonito.
